(I even tried exporting the table, editing in Excel, and importing back, but that doesn't change the type, and actually creates new duplicates of nodes...). Is there any other way to change the type...

Do you mean exporting the data tables? Maybe you found it by now, but in case, there is a "Export table" button right next to the "Import spreadsheet" button that might just do what you need
